Carved Cherry Mantle

This mantle is made from a solid piece of cherry from a tree that was cut down to make room for the client's new home. The deep relief carving represents their personal love for the St. Lawrence River and the Adirondacks in three scenes. The top and bottom are trimmed in mahogany and the corners reflect the timber structure of the new residence. Thinned shellac was applied multiple times during carving for stability and the piece was covered when not worked to protect against uneven discoloration from UV light and oxidation. The mantle is finished with four coats of satin laquer.

Custom Woodworking

Shaker Style Night Stand

This night stand was custom made for a very small space between a bed and a wall. It is made of solid maple and cherry with tapered legs and is joined by mortise and tenon. The top is two edge glued pieces of butterfly matched curley maple.

The piece is finished with wax but the top received three coats of laquer before being waxed.

My friend John Lunney turned the gorgeous burl bowl on top.

Custom Gate

Designed and built for a recently constructed home overlooking the St. Lawrence River, the clients needed to gate this opening for children and pets. The lake freighter motif occurs all around an expansive deck in the railing system so it was incorporated into the gate.  This piece is made of solid douglas fir with the motif panels mortised into the stiles. It was sealed with Smith's Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer and lightly sanded before being finished on site by others to match the existing deck railings.
